English
The InitiaLit program for Reception and Year 1 students is used to teach phonics systematically and explicitly. This includes the teaching of letter-sound correspondences and how these are applied to reading and spelling. Vocabulary, oral language and listening comprehension are experienced through quality children’s literature. Parents are asked to listen to their children read regularly. Regular assessment is built into the program.
Mathematics
Using a hands on approach we develop students’ understanding of building and deconstructing number through: subitising, trusting the count, and looking at part-part-whole concepts. Number talks are a feature of maths lessons throughout all year levels at Paracombe Primary School. Students are assessed using standardised tests and the Big Ideas in Maths, the data collected then informs a differentiated program for every student.
Transition
We share a strong transition program with our school based preschool. Students connect with each other throughout the year and the preschool children attend the Junior Primary class regularly, to strengthen relationships with staff and peers. Our JP class also visits children at the preschool for regular structured play experiences.
